Purple Girls

‘Purple Girls’ was written in my final year of University. Inspired by the work of Ashlee Haze who’s spoken word poetry had been sampled on Blood Orange’s 2016 track ‘By Ourselves’, I wanted to articulate how the women in my life had contributed to the emotional growth I experienced in my early twenties. Purple Girls was my first published work and featured as part of a series on ‘Love’ put together by Polyester Zine in February of 2019. Since then the poem has been reimagined by filmmaker Qezz Gill in association with Bristols Watershed.

Poem 4

‘Poem 4’ was started in June of 2019, and has the feeling of an ongoing project that will later be lengthened. It’s written in the style of my favorite artist Noname who continues to be a point of reference within my writing. The last line of ‘Poem 4’ will form the title of a series of poems I hope to one day collate and publish.
